Open your eyes today and you will discover that you are a part of a magnificent work of creation. Whether you study astronomy, biology, physics, or chemistry, the evidence of observable phenomena infers by logical necessity the existence of an intelligent Designer behind the intelligible design in the natural world.
The scientist JOHANNES KEPLER described science as "thinking God's thoughts after Him."
ALBERT EINSTEIN said, "Everyone who is seriously interested in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe- a spirit vastly superior to man, and one in the face of which our modest powers must feel humble."
In his book, "Pensees," French mathematician, scientist and philosopher, BLAISE PASCAL wrote, "Faith tells us what the senses cannot, but it is not contrary to their findings. It simply transcends, without contradicting them." Pascal invented the first working barometer and made such significant innovations in the field of probability science and mathematics that today a computer language is named after him.
ISAAC NEWTON wrote of theology and science. In his work titled, "Principia" he said that "This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being. ..Atheism is so senseless. When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance."
Do you realize that this massive earth fits into the volume of the sun 1,000,000 times and that its flames leap up to one mile at a time? One second of energy from the sun is 13 million times the average amount of electricity used each year in the United States. It is only a small sun among billions in the universe. The fact that it has been perfectly placed 93,000,000 miles from the earth, is only one of an ever growing number of parameters we are discovering as being necessary for the maintenance of life on the earth as we know it. Did you know if the polar ice would melt it is estimated that the sea level would rise high enough to reach the 20th floor of the Empire State Building?
George Gallup, the famous statistician said, "If I could prove God statistically; take the human body alone; the chance that all of the functions of the individual would just happen, is a statistical monstrosity."
Isaac Newton said, "I have a foundational belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by men who were inspired." It is no wonder that many of the founders and developers of branches of modern science reportedly had a strong abiding faith in the Scriptures. The following are listed in the book titled, "Men of God, Men of Science":
- Joseph Lister, Antiseptic surgery
- Louis Pasteur, Bacteriology
- Robert Boyle, Chemistry and Gas Dynamics
- Georges Cuvier, Comparative Anatomy
- Charles Babbage, Computer Science
- Lord Rayleigh, Dimensional Analysis
- John Ambrose Fleming, Electronics
- James Clerk Maxwell, Electrodynamics
- Michael Faraday, Electromagnetics and Field Theory
- Lord Kelvin, Energetics
- Henri Fabre, Entomology of Living Insects
- George Stokes, Fluid Mechanics
- Sir William Herschel, Galactic Astronomy
- John Ray, Natural History
- Gregor Mendel, Genetics
- Matthew Maury, Oceanography
- ...and the list goes on.
Even CHARLES DARWIN expressed his own misgivings on his evolutionary theories in his book, "The Origin of the Species" as he contemplated the complexity of the eye. "To suppose that the eye could have been formed by natural selection seems, I confess, absurd in the highest degree." Today we realize that so many organisms demand the highest level of complexity for the minimum requirement for their functions. Later in his life, Darwin called much of the content of his evolutionary theory, "the unformed ideas of my youth."
If Darwin were alive today he would see that the fossil record has yet to offer any evidence an intermediate or transitionary form to support his theory of evolution from one species into another (macro-evolution). In fact a conference on "Macro-Evolution" held at the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History, gave the following report: "The central question of the Chicago conference was whether mechanisms underlying microevolution can be extrapolated to explain the phenomena of macroevolution. At risk of doing violence to the positions of some of the people at the meeting, the answer can be given as a clear, 'No.'" (reported by Roger Levin in the journal, Science, Vol. 210).
The same designer who planned the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into the butterfly has planned a necessary spiritual metamorphosis for humankind. It begins with a realization that we have not glorified God as we should have (see Romans 1:20). We have not obeyed the law written in our hearts (Romans 2:15) much less the commandments written on stone. We need to acknowledge that we have fallen short of God's glorious ideal for living (Romans 3:23) and put our trust in what Christ has done for us (Romans 5:8). The simple act of faith by which we transfer our trust from our own efforts to put ourselves in the right with God to trusting what Christ has done on our behalf, enables us to receive God's free gift of pardon, cleansing and new life in the spirit (Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9-13).
