Once during our time of ministry in England, I received a telephone call from a remarkable actor who was appearing in a production in which he played seven different roles on stage. He asked me if I could meet with him after an evening performance. He had received a tape of one of the messages I had preached in London and wanted to know more about spiritual matters. I agreed to meet with him one night at a restaurant near the theater. There he asked me how he could know God in a personal and real way. Of all the roles in life that were available to play, he wanted to know the one written for him. I told him the simple gospel message, illustrating each point on a napkin as I proceeded to explain how his life could be transformed by the power of God. He listened intently as I told him how our sins separated us from God. Through Christ coming to take the punishment our sins deserved, God made it possible for sinners to be reconciled. We can come to know God personally through trusting Christ as our Lord and Savior. That night the young actor did just that.
We all play many different roles in our lives. Some are relevant to the significant people and projects around us. Others are roles that really do not suit us.
Acknowledge the role that God has written for your life. You were created to know Him and to love Him. You were also given family and friends to love. He has given you unique gifts, talents and opportunities that can contribute to the purpose of making Him known.
Luigi Pirandello once wrote a play called. "Six Characters in Search of an Author." Once you discover the "Author and Finisher of your Faith," you can properly develop the roles He has written for you: your role in relationship to Him (as a worshiper and disciple), your role in relationship to your spouse, your family, your job, and Christ's church. He loves you and has purchased you at great cost to play a major role in His plan.
