After World War II, Robert Woodruff declared his vision: "In my generation it is my desire that everyone in the world have a taste of Coca Cola!" An outrageous goal for an enterprising soft drink enthusiast? Today Coca Cola is known from the deserts of Africa to the interior of China, in every major country of the world. Woodruff was able to motivate his colleagues to reach their generation for Coke.
Nearly two thousand years ago Jesus of Nazareth left his small band of followers with the goal to "preach the gospel to every nation." In each generation, a remnant of believers has risen to the challenge to tackle this goal afresh. What will it take for us to reach the estimated 3.5 billion people in our generation who have never heard the gospel of Christ? Is the goal too far-fetched? Not according to the Master. The Lord Jesus committed all of His resources and His very presence to those who would dare respond to the challenge (Matthew 28:20).
John Mott was offered a great sum of money to take a leadership position for the Standard Oil Company. Mott refused. No one knew the Asian market or the Chinese people like Mott. He was the ideal candidate for the job, so the Oil Company upped the proposed salary, finally making an offer they thought this statesman could not refuse. To their astonishment, John Mott replied: "Your price is right, but your job is too small. God has called me to be a missionary."
No matter what your station is in life, remember the vocation Christ has given you: "Make disciples of all kinds of people, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19) We may not all be pioneer evangelists, teachers, or preachers, but we are all called to be missionaries. We all have a part to play in the winning of this world for Jesus Christ. May we be spiritually mature enough to realize our calling. What can you do today to advance the purpose of Christ?
William Carey said, "Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God." With that phrase the modern missionary movement was born.
To our shame, we often make plans that are no bigger than ourselves. We believe the Lord can do anything, but we expect Him to do nothing. We fail to believe God for the seemingly impossible and settle for status-quo. It is time that we renew our vision for what God can do.
Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father." (John 14:12-13 NIV).
Jesus said that ANYONE who has faith in him, will do what He has been doing. This is because after going to the Father He gave the church the gift of the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. Because of the Spirit indwelling us, He will be doing the works through us.
What great things are you expecting from God to further the ministry of Jesus Christ today? What great things will you attempt?
Our expectation is from Him (Psalm 62:5). David MacAdam, Pastor/Teacher New Life Community Church |
