"As unreliable as a faulty (deceitful) bow." (Psalm 78:57 NIV). "They turn, but not upward, They are like a deceitful bow." (Hosea 7:16 NASB).
A deceitful bow is one whose arrows cannot keep a straight trajectory. To the dismay of the archer, the bow sends the arrow towards a destination other than the one targeted. Although the arrow is properly aimed, it goes astray when launched because the firing instrument malfunctions. Its own natural inclinations get in the way of the archer's intentions and cause the arrow to go off course.
What causes an instrument such as a bow to become unreliable, faulty or deceitful? If a bow string is continually pulled taut and never loosened, the bow becomes an untrustworthy instrument. The bow looses its accurate resilience. With the constant tension and pull, it looses its spring, no longer able to return to its original relaxed position.
The same thing can happen with the human instruments.
If there is no let-up from physical, mental and emotional tension, we can become deceitful bows, likely to misfire. We need to be renewed, refreshed and receive regular maintenance if we are to stay to the intended course and successfully make progress towards our targeted goals. This is one reason why the Scriptures give us mandates for spiritual health, prescribing a rhythm of rest, reflection and renewal.
David, the psalmist and Shepherd-King, appreciated the fact that He was called to be instrumental in the Lord's purposes. He learned how to drink deeply from His replenishing streams, saying, "The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul." (Psalm 23:1-3).
Without spiritual maintenance, we easily fall back on our natural bent. Lack of spiritual renewal can cause us to misfire when it comes to making important decisions. This is why we need to stay refreshed in our understanding of the cross of Christ and learn to live in its application. We need to draw from our 'new creation' resources in Christ rather than our old Adamic inheritance which includes all of our learned habits for getting needs met apart from realizing the Divine Provision.
Physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, we need to be renewed and recharged lest we become unreliable instruments. For example, are we too busy to hear the still small voice of the Spirit, the correction of an enlightened conscience, or heed the advice of Scriptural counsel? Are we so engaged in the work of God that the work becomes our God?
Heed the call, loosen the string, and rest in the hands of the One who holds you. He knows how to restore you to mint condition. The Greater David, the True Shepherd- Warrior King calls: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you (Sabbath) rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:28-29).
Our work is to be engaging with God. We can be instrumental to the degree that we realize our union with Him. We are not called to bear or share our own yokes, but to forsake them all. Take His yoke and partner with Him. Keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). Plow when He plows. Rests when He rests. His presence will refresh your weary soul.
