The surgeon general warns us that 60% of the U.S. population live dangerously sedentary lives. We don't get enough exercise. Fitness experts are being called to the rescue. They are prescribing movements that exercise your body without much risk of causing damage. Sit-ups and crunches from the floor are considered poor for the back. The same muscles can be exercised by bowing down while seated. And walking is still one of the best overall exercises.
The New Testament refers to our life as a spiritual exercise: a 'walk'. Walk honestly, in the light, by faith, in love, in the Spirit, in the newness of life, circumspectly, in wisdom, and in a way that is worthy of our high calling.
Have you ever noticed the physical movements prescribed in Scripture for worship? If we would exercise our hearts in obedience to these we would get a great overall workout!
There are twenty actions associated with worship in Scripture:
- Kneeling (Psalm 95:6)
- Bowing Down (Psalm 95:6)
- Lifting hands (Psalm 141:2; 1Timothy 2:8; Psalm 63:4)
- Standing before the Lord in Awe (Psalm 4:4 KJV)
- Clapping hands (Psalm 47:1)
- Playing Instruments (Psalm 33:2; 92:3; 144:9; 98:6) (New research has confirmed that the exercise of playing the harp and lyre is a healing therapy).
- Shaking tambourines and playing percussion (A real work out)- (Psalm 150:5)
- Dancing before the Lord (Psalm 150:4)
- Bowing our heads (Genesis 24)
- Lifting our heads and eyes (Psalm 3:3; Psalm 123:1)
And these do not include the vocal work-outs of praying, praising, singing and shouting for joy (Psalm 47:6; 59:16;69:30;98:1; 66:8; 32:11; 100:1-2; 132:9)!
Worship is a total exercise - We worship with our regenerated spirits (Romans 1:9) renewed minds (Philippians 2:3-5) and revived emotions (Romans 12:11-15). Intelligent worship is to present our whole bodies to God as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1 Amplified Bible).
Let's exercise ourselves unto godliness. (1Timothy 4:7-8). David MacAdam, Pastor/Teacher New Life Community Church |
